Turning 18? Time to think about medical directives, wills.

It is a good idea to sign a Durable Power of Attorney, Medical Power of Attorney, Directive to Physicians and HIPAA release after one turns 18 years of age.

Q: When a minor turns 18, what estate documents should be drafted, and how soon? What if trust funds will begin being disbursed to that person at that age?

A: Once a person reaches age 18 (the age of majority in Texas), it is a good idea for that person to sign a Durable Power of Attorney, Medical Power of Attorney, Directive to Physicians and HIPAA release.

Some 18-year-olds have bank or brokerage accounts, possibly as a result of a trust terminating as you mentioned, and if so, then they should set up the accounts so that they have payable on death beneficiaries. Often, siblings are named first with the parents named as........
