Solidarity at sea and in the streets: is a new era emerging for Palestine?

As global solidarity with Palestine intensifies, from mass strikes in Rome to diplomatic recognition across continents, pressure mounts on international institutions to act. But with violence ongoing and trust fractured, is the world finally ready to push for peace — or merely managing optics asks Herald columnist Roz Foyer

Last week, Italian trade unions took to the streets in Rome, FIFA came under sustained pressure to ban to suspend Israeli football teams and Angus Robertson called for Israel to be excluded from the Eurovision Song contest. Is pressure increasing that could lead to the beginning of a resolution for Palestinians?

In the middle of last week, Pope Leo XIV, asked about Palestine stated that “The Holy See recognized the two-state solution some time ago. That is clear: we must seek a path that respects all peoples. Regarding that recognition, he added: “It could help, but right now there is no real willingness to listen on the part of the other side; dialogue is broken.”

He had earlier in that week in his Sunday sermon spoken of Gaza as a ‘martyred land’.

Between these two days, Italian trade unions had undertaken a general strike in solidarity with the people of Gaza. Neither of these moments will........
