From picket lines to Parliament: women are leading Scotland’s fightback
At last week’s STUC Women’s Conference, Scotland’s trade union women made it clear: they’re organised, mobilised, and demanding better. From care strikes to anti-racism solidarity, their new manifesto is a rallying cry for justice, equality and real change ahead of the Holyrood elections says Roz Foyer
The STUC Women’s Conference was a powerful reminder – for those who needed reminding – that Scotland’s trade union movement has a steely glint of determination in our eyes.
Determination can be a powerful thing when it is harnessed collectively. Despite what some would like to portray, Scotland’s trade union women, on the basis of last week at the very least, are not divided nor defeated. We’re organised and mobilised. As we look ahead to the Scottish Parliament elections next year, women trade unionists are demanding better – not just for ourselves, but for the kind of fair, equal Scotland we want for everyone.
From social care workers to teachers, healthcare workers to hospitality staff, women shared their experiences of holding families, workplaces and communities together through crisis after crisis. They also shared their determination to demand change.
