At last, good news for Glasgow Airport on transatlantic flights

Glasgow Airport has had the rebuilding of transatlantic connectivity firmly on its radar for a long time, writes Business Editor Ian McConnell.

What a difference a couple of wins make.

It was heartening indeed to hear this week that Glasgow Airport had secured another significant transatlantic success.

Rebuilding connectivity with North America has been firmly on the airport’s radar in recent years.

And Glasgow Airport for a while had to watch as gains on this front proved elusive and Edinburgh Airport enjoyed significant transatlantic wins.

Things are going better for Glasgow Airport now on this front.

On Tuesday, the airport was able to announce its second major transatlantic success in a matter of weeks.

It revealed that WestJet, one of Canada’s largest airlines, had confirmed it is to return to Glasgow Airport in 2026 with the launch of direct services to Toronto.

The inaugural flight to Toronto Pearson International Airport will take off on May 15 next year, with WestJet operating four services per week using one of its growing fleet of Boeing 737 Max aircraft.

Glasgow Airport observed: “It is the first time WestJet will have operated at Glasgow since 2022, with the new service further strengthening links between the economic powerhouses of Scotland and Canada.”
