Vladimir Putin’s recent assertion that Russian forces are “advancing every day across the entire line of contact” in Ukraine is less a military assessment than a political performance designed for domestic consumption. The speech, delivered at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, contained contradictions so glaring they undermine its own credibility. Most notably, Putin claimed that Russian troops are now “12 km from the circle road of Sumy,” despite stating in June that they were only 10.5 km away.

The Sumy claim collapses under minimal scrutiny. First, Sumy has no ring road or “circle road” to speak of, a geographical fiction that OSINT analysts and Ukrainian military commands have repeatedly pointed out. Second, even by Putin’s own arithmetic, Russian forces have not advanced toward Sumy but have retreated 1.5 km farther from it over two months.
