Makar Saṅkrānti: A Sacred Solar Transition Beyond The Harvest Narrative
The last two days we celebrated Makar Saṅkrānti, followed by Māṭu Poṅgal in South India, where we expressed gratitude towards farm animals. Nowadays, many people dismiss it merely as a harvest festival—a grave misunderstanding that attempts to secularise and sever it from its Hindu roots.
India traditionally had two to three grain harvests annually. If this were simply about celebrating harvest, why only Makar Saṅkrānti? Why not mark the other harvests with equal significance? This question itself reveals the deeper truth.
