Travelers looking to save some money on shoulder season this fall may be out of luck thanks to the rising cost of jet fuel.

Airfares typically drop between Labor Day and mid-November, but the average domestic airfare for a ticket this fall is 39% higher than it was last year, and international fares are on the rise too, according to data from Hopper Technology Solutions. Jet fuel, which accounts for up to a quarter of an airline’s operating expenses, has surged 50% since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran in late February.

“The jet fuel price increase has been so sustained that at this point, airlines have to pass it along to customers to protect their own economics,” Hayley Berg, HTS’s lead economist, told Forbes.
