When you first hear that Donald Trump has explained to the prime minister of Norway that his hostile takeover plan for Greenland is partly because he didn’t get the Nobel Peace Prize, which means he doesn’t have to worry as much about peace as before, though of course he does still favour peace, you think, well, that must be made up because no president of the United States — no normal person, really — would say such a thing even if at some stage the thought had crossed his mind. So many idle thoughts fly in and out of our minds, some quite extraordinary, but civilization continues precisely because we don’t give voice to them all.

But then you think, well, this president says extraordinary things all the time and does public dives deep into his intricately gilded psyche even when most of the world would prefer he didn’t, so maybe the reports are true. And maybe the Norwegians do have it in for him. They’re the kind of sophisticated European globalists who would look down their noses at Trump. And Trump’s peace credentials, though self-exaggerated — some of the wars he claims to have ended smoulder still — are certainly greater than Barack........
