It is all too easy to promote the idea that the United States of America  — about to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the 1776 Declaration of Independence, which stated that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” — is now on the brink of various political, economic, social and international meltdowns. They call it the “collapse of America.”

It is also easy for much of the world, especially Canadians, to see President Donald Trump’s irrational and incoherent administration as a harbinger of a major negative transformation. Global crises, from Ukraine to Sudan, reinforce the idea that we are living through unprecedented upheaval that will send the U.S. and the rest of the world into decline.
