In Ontario, half of all sixth-grade students fail to meet provincial standards in mathematics, despite being tested with questions such as solving for k given the equation k – 9 = 4. The latest issue of ETFO Voice, the magazine of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, likely won’t make Ontario parents feel any better about the public education system.

The president’s message at the front of the magazine appears under a bold red title, “Fight for our Future.” That’s all well and good, but unfortunately the full title reads, not “Fight for our Future: Improve Math Instruction for the Next Generation” or “Fight for our Future: Strategies for Teaching Algebra,” but instead: “Fight for our Future: Why Climate Justice is Education Justice.”
