Robert Reich: The Real Fix For Social Security – OpEd

Trustees (the author once sat among them) say full Social Security benefits last only until 2033, then about 77%. Trump’s “fix”—end tax on benefits—would empty the trust faster. The author’s preferred path: lift the payroll-tax cap so high earners pay more. Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) joined Sen. Warren on that; Rep. Tom Cole would rather raise revenue than cut benefits.

The shortfall, in this telling, is not a surprise wave of boomers—the 1983 hike of full retirement age from 65 to 67 was meant for that. It is that more national income sits above the cap ($184,500 in 2026). A $20m CEO is taxed on about 1% of pay; a worker under the cap on 100%. Inequality above the cap has cost the trust more than $1.4 trillion since 1983, the piece says.

A Democratic plan: no cap on earnings over $250,000, plus tax investment income for Social Security. Estimate cited: 75 more years of solvency without a tax rise on 93% of households. The author calls Trump’s plan ruin and the cap-lift fair—and claims some Republicans are drifting that way. Advocacy letter, not a CBO score.

One of the reasons I write this letter to you each day is to arm you with the facts and analyses you need to respond to the garbage coming out of Trump’s Republican Party.

Today I want to talk to you about Social Security.

The trustees of Social Security — of which yours truly was once a member — say the program will be able to pay full benefits only until 2033. After that, Social Security will be able to dole out only roughly 77........
