A new Secretary-General will soon take the helm of an institution in profound crisis. Yet writing the UN off as a relic would be a profound mistake. The institution is deeply flawed, but its core ideals—dialogue, multilateralism, and shared human dignity—are more vital than ever. More importantly, the UN is not dying; it is being forced to evolve. And paradoxically, the very forces that threaten it—American disengagement and Chinese ambition—may finally transform it into a more genuinely inclusive body, fit for a multipolar era.
