The Multilateralism–Unilateralism Debate – OpEd

The Catholic Church does not simply choose between multilateralism and unilateralism. Instead, she asks a deeper question: which approach better serves human dignity, justice, and the common good in a given situation? In simple terms, the Church evaluates how nations act, not merely how fast or how powerful they are. Like a shepherd discerning whether to guide the flock together or allow a sheep to wander alone, the Church’s concern is always the dignity of the person and the integrity of the community.

Multilateralism means countries work together—through institutions, treaties, and shared rules—to solve global problems. Examples include the United Nations, military alliances, and climate agreements. From a moral perspective, this approach often resonates with Catholic teaching.
