The controversy around the WNBA and the role of biological males in women’s sport is a welcome one. Perhaps we will finally get the kind of clarity we deserve and protect women’s sport for women, not men who wish they were women, are transitioning or are declaring themselves women.

Right now, the controversy centres around two men, Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, both former NBA players and first-round draft picks, but the real credit for raising this issue needs to go to Sophie Cunningham, a guard for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA.

In a profile piece published by ESPN last month, Cunningham spoke freely and widely about a number of issues. Toward the end of the interview, Cunningham weighed in on trans women, or biological males, in women’s sport.

“I want to protect young girls in a locker-room or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men,” Cunningham said.
