Museum wall badly damaged after being hit by bin lorry

Mildenhall and District Museum, in King Street, was hit on Saturday as the vehicle was manoeuvring in the neighbouring car park.

Treasurer Lloyd Hughes was visiting the museum on King Street this afternoon to meet with solicitors for the bin lorry operators.

He said: "It looked like a tank hit it," with it not being the first time the building was damaged by the vehicle, although it is far worse than the last time.

The previous time, several bricks needed to be replaced, but it is likely that scaffolding will need to be erected this time, due to it being part of a two-storey section of the building.

The museum still hopes to reopen on time next week. (Image: Newsquest)

Mr Hughes is hopeful that they will be able to reopen on Tuesday, March 3, once they have finalised their winter cleaning.

This year, the museum is celebrating 75 years since it first opened in 1951. Entry to the museum is free, with them relying on donations to operate.

The museum has a range of displays, from fossils to the Lakenheath Warrior and their horse, and the area's role in WWII.
