Norfolk prison staff claim more than £1m for violent assaults and injury
With prison population levels on the rise, the rate of assaults by prisoners on staff has also shot up.
And over the last half decade, pay-outs to staff across the county’s three jails have totalled £1,108,460.
The most common claims made by prison staff were for injuries sustained during assaults by prisoners, with 637 submissions.
However, pay-outs were also made for injuries caused by restraining inmates, and accidental falls.
A Norfolk prison officer was stabbed with a pair of scissors, while another was attacked with an electrical cable.
