Norwich Magistrates’ Court was told the teen had suffered extensive facial and other injuries including a “very nasty” gash to her forehead.

Brown, of Lower Gresham, near Felbrigg, pleaded not guilty to causing serious injury by careless driving.

He was at the wheel of a double-decker electric-powered First bus when the collision happened on Wroxham Road in Sprowston on November 15 last year.

The road is the route for the Pink Line service from Hoveton to Hethersett.

Jennifer Holt, prosecuting, said it was alleged he had failed to stop for a red light at a pedestrian crossing striking the youngster as she was walking across the road obeying the green figure lights.

She said the collision, which occurred near to the junction with Cozens-Hardy Road at around 12.15pm, had been witnessed by a number of other members of the public who had rushed to help.

The teenage girl is still suffering on-going psychological effects from the incident, she added.

Brown, who spoke only to confirm his details and enter a plea, will stand trial on April 5 next year. He was given unconditional bail.

The court was told the trial was likely to hear from expert witnesses over claims that the bus may have suffered a mechanical fault that left its brakes not properly working.

The collision happened just a few hours before a second collision on Wroxham Road when two pedestrians were hit by a car.

The man and woman - one of whom suffered serious injuries - required hospital treatment for injuries sustained in that collision near to the junction of Blenheim Road.
