Promenade reopens two months after large void discovered beneath it

North Norfolk District Council had closed a stretch of the walkway at Sheringham two months ago after discovering the void.

Initial investigations described the hole on the eastern end of the beach as large enough to "accommodate a Transit van" and work began to fill it last month.

Now, the council has announced that the work has been completed and the section of the promenade has now been reopened to the public.

In a post online, the council said: "We would like to thank you for your cooperation during these works."

Brian Farrow, coastal engineer at the council, had previously explained what may have caused such a large sinkhole.

He said the 1920s sea wall was founded on chalk - a soluble material which the sea can cut through.

And behind it, there is sand and gravel, which are then easily washed once the water cuts through the underside of the wall.
