Norfolk garden centre set to be demolished and replaced with new homes

Plans have emerged to demolish the Overstrand Garden Centre on Mundesley Road, near Cromer, and build 15 homes on the site.

Victoria Sheridan, the owner of the centre, submitted the outline proposal to North Norfolk District Council.

The bid aims to provide houses "suitable for an ageing population".

It comes after the garden centre closed in September 2024 as it was deemed "not financially viable" with costs rising, the planning documents say.

A statement continued: "The business has failed and in its current location, it is unlikely that a new operator can be found.

"In the current economic climate, we are seeing costs rise, and poor weather has led to many small family-owned businesses closing.

"The village population does not appear sufficient to support such an amenity, and a residential development will see a more suitable use for the land along with a modest increase in potential demand for existing, successful village amenities."

The development would include a mix of properties and 35pc will be classed as affordable in line with local policy.
