The key evidence that turned Steve Wright from a suspect into a confessed murderer

Steve Wright, already serving life for the 2006 Ipswich murders, admitted on Monday to the 1999 abduction and murder of 17-year-old Victoria Hall.

This confession brought closure after 26 years, during which Victoria’s family endured years of uncertainty and grief.

Victoria disappeared in the early hours of September 19, 1999. She was last seen by her friend Gemma Algar, walking home alone through Trimley St Mary after a night out at the Bandbox nightclub in Felixstowe.

Witnesses later recalled hearing two high-pitched screams and a car speeding away.

The investigation at the time involved a large search and extensive vehicle checks. Yet, despite early efforts, police were unable to identify Victoria’s killer.

It was only after a cold case review in 2018, and the reopening of investigations in 2019, that critical new evidence was found.

A hair submitted for analysis finally provided a match to Wright’s DNA profile, stored on the national database since 2001, when he was charged with a number of thefts, resulting in his DNA being stored on the national profile.........
