Report finds 'misogynistic' culture at council where worker was called 'the cleaner'

The investigation into North Walsham Town Council was triggered after a number of employees among the workforce made complaints about their treatment.

In the report, they accuse "certain councillors" are resisting changes proposed by staff and meeting them with "challenges and resentment”.

It follows months of turmoil at the authority, which has led to numerous investigations into staff and councillor conduct and revelations of financial failings that have angered the town.

Attempts to resolve the acrimony have already seen more than £30,000 spent on HR firms and legal fees.

The latest report includes recommendations that councillors and staff take several courses related to harassment awareness and equality, diversity and inclusion training.

The council had hoped the latest report would draw a line under the issue.

However, critics claim the problems are still not being grasped.

Six out of ten councillors refused to take part in the investigation and at a recent meeting, they all declined the opportunity to discuss its findings.
