Tory council U-turns over decision to wipeout £460k of debt owed by its own company
Breckland Council’s Conservative cabinet agreed in January to cancel loans totalling £515,415 owed by Breckland Bridge and its private partner, Land Group Ltd.
However the motion was pulled before it could be voted on by the authority’s members, after Paul Hewett, the executive member for property, postponed a decision until “cooler heads could prevail”.

The decision sparked fierce scrutiny from councillors and the public, who had questioned why taxpayers money was being used to cancel one of the council’s own business ventures.
Of the £515,415 owed, £464,000 - including interest - was owed by the council while the rest was owed to Land........
