Home Office under pressure over reports former nuclear site could become migrant camp

Locals living near RAF Barnham say there has been increased activity there in recent weeks and believe it could be one of the military sites the government wants to use for migrant accommodation.

When contacted for information, the Ministry of Defence declined to comment and passed the request to the Home Office.

The Home Office itself would not confirm or deny whether it planned to move migrants in.

It is now facing calls from a nearby MP to explain what is going on.

Nick Timothy, the Conservative MP for West Suffolk and former Downing Street chief of staff, said: "I am alarmed by reports that the site of RAF Barnham - which is very close to my constituency of West Suffolk - may be used to house asylum seekers without proper local consultation.

"Local people deserve transparency about decisions like this. Housing undocumented asylum seekers here would affect safety, services and cohesion."
