The Swanton Morley Delicatessen in Gooseberry Hill had to close to customers after it sustained structural damage in a crash.

The incident happened at 6.45am on Wednesday when a Bobby's Food van smashed into the building.

Police, ambulance and fire crews were sent to the scene and Bobby's Foods confirmed the driver of the van was taken to hospital.

A spokesman for the deli said: "As many of you are aware, there was an accident involving the side of our shop.

"So just to update further, the deli will remain closed for the foreseeable future.

"Thanks for your patience, we will update further hopefully soon."

Customers will still be able to buy deli items, including all the usual pastries, ham and cheese, as they are now available and on display in the butcher's shop at the front of the building.

From next Tuesday, the hot rolls will also be back on sale.
