The black-and-white image, capturing the start of Great Yarmouth’s 1938 herring season, appears in a new 616-page history book Britain in the 1930s by historians Steven Brindle and Maureen Hill.

The book features more than 900 images from the Associated Newspapers archive, including material from Getty, Hulton, and Keystone, to paint a portrait of everyday life across Britain in the decade before the Second World War.

The Yarmouth photograph captures a moment of decline in a town once known as one of the world’s greatest fishing ports.
