Full extent of damage to derelict nightclub revealed

The document - a structural engineers' survey - says that the Ocean Room in Gorleston has suffered significant structural deterioration due to long-term rainwater saturation and lack of maintenance.

The art deco building has stood empty since March 2024, when previous tenants and operators Ocean Room Entertainments went into administration.

The venue was then handed back to owners Great Yarmouth Borough Council, which commissioned a survey that painted a grim picture of the building.

The council has said the survey was made available as part of the sale process, though the full structural report was only released publicly following this newspaper's FOI request.

It found severe long-term corrosion to the steel frame, outward-leaning parapet walls, rainwater ingress throughout, rot and fungal attack in roof timbers, concrete deterioration to the staircases, and asbestos-containing materials in multiple areas.

The report warned the repairs are likely to be extensive, disruptive, costly and time-consuming.
