Esmae Thorburn from Wimbotsham, near Downham Market, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) at just 13 months old.

SMA, which is found in around eight in 100,000 children worldwide, is a genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle wasting and weakness due to the absence of a gene which produces a vital protein for muscle health.

Esmae needs intensive physiotherapy along with a specialised wheelchair and equipment as she battles with her parents Hannah Stockmeier and Jordan Thorburn to help stave off the onslaught of the disease.

"I strongly believe that with the right help, with the right physio, she will walk," said Miss Stockmeier, 27, who cares for her daughter full-time. "That's the ultimate goal for me.

"She has learned to sit independently, balance, bum shuffle, crawl and kneel - all through determination, hard work and endless practice.
