Chief Constable Paul Sanford has warned protesters who stormed homes linked to asylum seekers and caused disorder in the town can expect to face "the full force of the law".

Officers were subjected to "significant aggression," with one hit with a rock, one bitten and another spat at during clashes in Clover Way on Wednesday evening, when a home was also stormed by masked men.

The night before, windows were smashed and a group of asylum seekers had to be escorted from a HMO in St John’s Way.

A total of five people have so far been arrested during the three nights of dramatic events, which were centred on Chester Way on Thursday.

Brian Thompson, 68, of Fairfields, Thetford, has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon, namely a wooden bat.

Approximately 60 officers were on the scene on Thursday evening, with resources drafted in from Essex, Cambridge, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.
