Over the years Torquay United have witnessed some wonderful goals – and they usually go down in Gulls folklore. So it must be extra galling for Matt Jay to not only score that goal away from home, but also in a game that ended so spectacularly badly.
With Torquay already 1-0 up following a cool penalty in the 21st minute by Cody Cooke, it was in the 36th minute that the ball came to Jay, who was in his own area. He took one touch to control it and knock it forward into space. He looked up and saw the Chelmsford goalkeeper Ted Collins off his line. The next moment he had struck the ball beautifully and it was flying over the top of the stranded Collins – before dipping........
