Remembering the Queen Isabella Causeway Collapse: 25 Years Later

Around 2 a.m., a tugboat pushing four barges collided with a support pier of the Queen Isabella Causeway—the sole road link between Port Isabel on the Texas mainland and South Padre Island.
The impact caused sections of the bridge to collapse into the Laguna Madre, creating a gap of roughly 160 to 240 feet near the structure’s highest point, about 85 feet above the water.
Unaware of the sudden void in the roadway, multiple vehicles plunged into the water.
Eight people lost their lives.
Three survived, rescued in part by fishermen who were on the water nearby that night and responded quickly.
