Trump’s Ranting Could Push D.C. Fireworks Show to July 5

Donald Trump is facing quite the conundrum. Last month, he announced that rather than hosting a unifying celebration of America’s 250th birthday on July 4, the main event in Washington, D.C., will be the “most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all.” In the same Truth Social post, Trump promised to conclude the Independence Day festivities with “the LARGEST FIREWORKS SHOW IN HISTORY, right here in our Nation’s Capital.”

For most other presidents, this wouldn’t be a problem. They’d read some soaring prepared remarks celebrating the nation’s history, then sit down and watch a carefully scheduled fireworks show. But Trump’s love of record-breaking spectacles is coming into conflict with his passion for largely extemporaneous ranting.

D.C.’s fireworks show typically starts a short time after sunset, which is at 8:37 p.m. on Saturday. But as the Washington Post explained this week, the start time has been pushed back by a least an hour:

Typically, the Fourth of July fireworks at the core of the nation’s capital begin a little before 9:30 p.m. and last 17 to 25 minutes. This year, the show won’t begin until after 10:30 p.m. and may not start until 11 p.m., a spokesperson for Freedom 250, the public-private partnership aligned with President Donald Trump that has taken over much of the programming for America’s semiquincentennial, said in an email. The show is expected to last approximately 40 minutes.
