Donald Trump is a huge proponent of election conspiracy theories, and his fixation on the 2020 election specifically feels pathological. After the catastrophe of January 6, 2021, nearly every respectable figure in Trump’s party agreed that Joe Biden had won legitimately. Even when Trump began his own comeback and again commanded the allegiance of the GOP, it was common for Republican politicians to roll their eyes at his take on 2020, and change the subject.

More recently, though, the 47th president has grown more insistent in his election denialism, to the point that no one who dares to challenge it openly can obtain a significant position in his administration. In confirmation hearings, Democrats have great fun taunting Trump’s nominees on this subject, knowing they cannot honestly answer questions like “Who won the 2020 presidential election?” But all the while, the president’s own preoccupation with the great crime of 2020 and its implications appears to have grown and grown, and it can no longer........
