On Monday, a senior United Nations official said what aid workers on the ground have been reporting for months: Hamas is actively obstructing humanitarian operations in Gaza. In a statement, the UN’s deputy special coordinator for the Middle East said armed men affiliated with Hamas forced their way into a food distribution point in Jabalia, halted deliveries, and assaulted two truck drivers at a World Food Programme warehouse. The UN called it part of “an increasingly dangerous pattern of intimidation, violence and obstruction.” Hamas denies it. But this wasn’t an Israeli talking point—it came from the UN’s own humanitarian office, the same body that has spent two years documenting Gaza’s suffering in painstaking detail.
