Carney won’t support Cuba against US aggression, so we must

Mark Carney is missing in action on Cuba. While the prime minister has found time to praise the illegal US-Israeli war on Iran and bail out private housing developers, he has said nothing about the recent tightening of the US government’s six-decade blockade of Cuba. This is despite vocal demands—including from the NDP and Bloc Québécois—that Carney provide aid to the besieged Caribbean island, with which Canada has long enjoyed positive relations.

The economic strangulation of Cuba—intensified following the US attack on Venezuela in January 2026, which Carney’s government tacitly supported—has worsened already existing shortages of food, medicine, electricity, water, and more. Infant mortality has risen sharply due to the Trump administration’s tightened sanctions. More than 100,000 Cubans, including 12,000 children, have been pushed onto waiting lists for surgeries.

While the Cuban government has shown its willingness to negotiate with the US government—and even to make significant concessions, as a recent package of economic reforms shows—the Trump administration continues to ramp up its aggression against Cuba.
