I just finished watching a compelling clip by 'Black Guns Matter' founder Maj Toure. It probed pushback a viral video of young Black men rapping with firearms has gotten from disapproving gun advocates.
Toure ascribed racial bigotry to the outcry. Reckless handling by participants was correctly also noted in his analysis. He also told detractors he was 'ten toes down' in his support of Kyle Rittenhouse, also the same age as young Black men in the video. It underscored his universal support for the Second Amendment.
How viral 'hood videos' are weaponized (Maj Toure, March 28, 2026).
Like 'Black Guns Matter', my advocacy also began in the inner city. His work incalcates safety and civics into a population many have written off.
As he said, and I agree, the video showed a lot of inner city bravado while brandishing weapons. Where he and I differ is that I've never supported such content. Rap music has been repackaged as 'toxic hip hop' to use a term coined by Black nationalist economist Dr. Boyce Watkins. This toxicity isn't just in poor taste, it popularizes shooting poor people like they're human targets.
I've called it 'urban death culture' for years. As an advocate, I get a ringside seat to the destructive mindset promoted by such videos.
I support Maj Toure in his efforts. We just drew different conclusions on this particular topic.
Rap videos glorifying egotistical misuse of firearms however, offer a first impression at odds with prudent Second Amendment practices. For the record, I'd also draw similar conclusions about armed 'Gen Z' White nationalist or Latino gang glorification
Too often these videoes are simply a prequel to very real off-camera mayhem.
Toure sees it as a teachable moment. I hope he's right.
