Breakenridge: Alberta leading the way in housing starts — without rent controls

In our unpredictable and constantly evolving news cycle, it can be difficult for any single issue or debate to remain at the forefront. Still, it’s hard not to notice the extent to which the debate around rent control in Alberta has all but vanished from the public discourse.

That’s not to say that concerns over affordability — or housing costs specifically — have gone away, but it’s become evident that the case for rent control was always rather weak. This is important to note, not just for the purpose of dunking on one side of this debate, but to illustrate what the solution to this problem actually looks like.

As it turns out, the basic economic laws around supply and demand offered us the answer all along — Alberta is leading the country in new housing starts and that’s being reflected in housing costs.
