The failed promises surrounding community access to what was previously known as Millennium Park can be plainly seen on its expanded basketball courts.

What basketball courts, you might ask?

You’d be forgiven for missing them: they’re hard to spot because they don’t have any nets. At least that’s how things were when I wandered around there over the last two weekends.

Through the course of this year, I’ve seen the basketball courts used more often as a parking space for people working on construction projects there or making preparations for events at the park than actually being used for hoops.

Never mind the sign at the park boldly announcing the courts have been supposed to be open since mid-July, pending safety inspection.

Ever since summer 2024, when the city announced a deal it struck with Penny Lane Entertainment to become a corporate sponsor of the only significant park space in Downtown West, locals have expressed concern about the future of what is now known as Cowboys Park.

Not to worry, officials said, as the 10-year agreement would help to fuel some much-needed TLC for park amenities.

To the city’s credit, there has been a lot of work above and below........
