As Canadians face an economic trade war with the United States, and Alberta faces its own group of insurrectionists, we cannot believe that things will just return to normal in the months ahead — no matter what normal might be.

Here are three ideas that governments at all levels can focus on as we emerge from these challenges.

There must be parliamentary reform. We all learned “representation by population” in elementary school, yet Canada has drifted far from that simple principle.

Compare New Brunswick and Alberta to make the point. New Brunswick has 10 MPs who each represent about 87,000 citizens, while in Alberta, 37 MPs each represent 136,700 citizens.
