Nelson: Raising speed limits is virtue signalling at its worst
So, this is Danielle Smith’s version of prairie libertarianism: drive as fast as you want on Alberta’s divided highways and don’t worry about getting a ticket.
It certainly seems that way, given the recent strange reasoning trotted out by her transportation minister, Devin Dreeshen.
His latest plan, which follows the deep-sixing of most radar enforcement on provincial highways, is jacking up speed limits on the major divided roads in Alberta. In doing so we’ll likely see average speeds reach about 130 km/h.
Of course, this speed bump is sold as a test early in the New Year. But make no mistake: the UCP cabinet is gung-ho to make our roads faster. Safer? Well, that’s another matter.
