If David had married Goliath instead of killing him, that might have reached the level of astonishment for many watching two former Alberta premiers smiling indulgently at each other.

When conservative Jason Kenney and socialist Rachel Notley announced they were banding together to “fight” the province’s separation question by leading a Canadian Chamber of Commerce campaign, the pairing came as a surprise. But that’s a superficial reaction.

In reality, the former premiers from different sides of the political spectrum are the same under the skin. They are Canadians. And today, that’s important.
