Imagine if former Vice President Kamala Harris had won in 2024 and was now spending this much time and taxpayer money on decorating projects. Republicans would be outraged and conservatives on social media would have many thoughts about how, of course, America’s first woman president wants to make things all pretty — rather than focus on more important matters. Yet, here we are, with President Donald Trump taking a turn as DC’s most powerful decorator.

That it’s all going awry only seems to serve as a metaphor for his slapdash, corrupt and distracted approach to governing. Take the Lincoln Memorial’s Reflecting Pool, now a mess of algae, peeling blue paint and dead ducks. This, after a $14.7 million (no-bid contract) renovation that Trump initially said would cost just $2 million.

Why has the media become so obsessed with this story? Do we just want to make the president look bad, when, in fact, there are more important matters to focus on? It’s a good question with one answer: The Reflecting........
