President Mohammed Shahabuddin brings serious allegations of repeated constitutional violations against Mohammed Yunus
After the jihadist uprising of 2024, Mohammed Yunus was flown in from France and installed as Chief Adviser, effectively placing Bangladesh in the hands of a group of foreign nationals who had common agenda of turning the country into a neo-colony of the foreign interests and following the end of Yunus’s illegal rule through a ballot revolution on February 12, Bangladesh’s President Mohammed Shahabuddin in an interview has provided many sensational details about violations of the constitution by Yunus, which may result in series of criminal charges against the former Chief Advisor. Meanwhile, following landslide victory of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, details of massive financial crimes committed by the cronies of Muhammad Yunus are getting published proving, during his 18-months rule, Yunus and his associates – most of whom are foreign passport holders had indulged into rampant corruption and loot of public wealth.
It is now being reported that under Yunus’s leadership, a loyal criminal network committed widespread corruption and various other crimes, embezzling thousands of crores of taka. In addition to systematically dismantling key state institutions, there was allegedly a covert plan to discredit and dissolve the Bangladesh Army and modeled after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), establish an Islamic Revolutionary Army (IRA) force in Bangladesh. These conspiracies reportedly involved not only Yunus himself but also certain serving and former officers of the Bangladesh Army, as well as Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI and Turkey’s espionage agency MIT.
At the same time, in pursuit of his ambition to become a “Supreme Leader” by transforming Bangladesh into a hardline Islamic caliphate state, Yunus is accused of plotting to remove all constitutional officeholders. According to President Mohammed Shahabuddin, Yunus and his extremist jihadist associates, along with local collaborators acting on behalf of foreign interests, spent months attempting to create mob unrest to remove the President or seize the presidential residence and assassinate him and his family in order to take full control of the country.
In a political development that could reshape Bangladesh’s post-transition narrative, President Mohammad Shahabuddin has publicly accused former Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus of repeatedly violating the country’s Constitution during his controversial 18-month tenure. The remarks, made in a lengthy interview to the Dhaka-based vernacular daily Kaler Kantho, mark the first time the President has openly described what he characterizes as sustained attempts to undermine constitutional order during Yunus’s time in office following the upheaval of 2024. The interview is already reverberating across Bangladesh’s political landscape – and it carries implications far beyond Dhaka.
President Shahabuddin has presented to the nation a startling account of how he spent the 18 months of Yunus’s illegal rule. He spoke candidly about many issues. He stated that for one and a half years he remained largely behind the scenes. Shahabuddin alleged that numerous conspiracies were carried out against him and described attempts to create a constitutional vacuum. According to his account, he remained firm in his decisions despite multiple plans to remove him unconstitutionally. One by one, those plans failed. During this difficult period, the top leadership of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) stood by the President. The BNP did not want Yunus to seize power by unconstitutionally removing the President.
Commenting on Muhammad Yunus, President Shahabuddin in the interview said, “The Chief Adviser did not comply with any provision of the Constitution”. The statement is extraordinary in its directness. Such allegations suggest not merely administrative irregularities but systemic disregard for constitutional protocol at the highest level of interim governance. With this public statement of the president, it is now asserted that Muhammad Yunus and his associates not only looted vast amounts of state resources through corruption and illegal activities but also committed serious crimes by repeatedly violating the Constitution. Under the existing laws of Bangladesh, such offenses can carry death penalty.
Yunus is also accused of attempting to remove President Shahabuddin by mobilizing extremist elements and criminals to create mob unrest. In his interview with the Dhaka newspaper, the President said: “There were many attempts to permanently destroy peace and order in the country and create a constitutional vacuum. I remained steadfast in my decision. As a result, none of the conspiracies succeeded. Especially the numerous plots to uproot the President unconstitutionally all failed. Therefore, I cannot say that the one and a half years at Bangabhaban was a pleasant experience. The storm that passed over me – I do not know whether anyone else could have endured such a storm”.
The President further stated that until just before the February 12 election, Mohammed Yunus, some of his advisers, and certain student leaders who led the anti–Sheikh Hasina movement made desperate efforts to remove the President and create a constitutional vacuum to consolidate power. At one point, an influential adviser to Yunus allegedly attempted to remove the President and install a former judge as interim President.
However, the former judge refused the unlawful proposal. He reportedly said clearly: “He (Shahabuddin Ahmed) is the President. Constitutionally, he stands above all – above everything. I cannot occupy that position unconstitutionally”. According to the president, because of the judge’s firm stance, that attempt by Yunus and his associates also ultimately failed.
Another key issue raised by the president concerns a reportedly controversial trade agreement with the United States signed shortly before the February election. Shahabuddin asserted that he was neither formally nor informally informed about the agreement, despite what he described as constitutional requirements mandating presidential awareness of major state decisions. It certainly raises serious procedural questions. In most parliamentary democracies, major bilateral agreements are communicated to the head of state, even if executive authority rests elsewhere.
In my opinion, this was a deliberate bypassing of protocol by Muhammad Yunus and his cronies as they wanted to keep the president as well as the entire nation into absolute dark about such agreement – while it was later revealed that this so-called bilateral trade agreement with the Trump administration in many ways has seriously compromised Bangladesh’s national interest and even sovereignty.
President Shahabuddin also described what he portrayed as systematic sidelining during Yunus’s tenure. He alleged that his press office was rendered ineffective and that he was prevented from undertaking certain state visits. Notably, he claimed he was unable to attend a conference in Qatar despite being invited as a chief guest by the Emir.
Although the President did not mention this detail in the interview – or may not have been aware of it – further investigation suggests that attempts were made to persuade Doha to change the invitation from the President to Yunus himself. Yunus allegedly wanted to attend the event and claim credit by delivering a speech. However, that effort did not succeed. Those reportedly involved in these acts of discourtesy and misconduct toward the President included the Foreign Affairs Adviser, the Law Adviser, Yunus’s close associate Lamia Murshed, and certain overzealous officials in the press department, along with other associates. It is also alleged that, with the intention of insulting the President, his photographs were removed overnight from Bangladeshi embassies abroad.
Through this explosive interview, President Shahabuddin definitely has opened the Pandora Box, which definitely shall be followed by many more revelations exposing series of crimes committed by Muhammad Yunus and his Islamist-jihadist and looter cabal.
