I take a mental leave whenever the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom happens to accuse the Indian establishment of violating human rights. A couple of years back, in its report, the USCIRF categorised as in the “Countries of Particular Concern” on the rights front. It observed that the Narendra Modi government allowed “campaigns of harassment and violence” against Muslims and other religious minorities in India. In 2024, the US State Department referred to the “ethnic conflict” between Kuki and Meitei groups in Manipur. It alleged “serious restrictions”  on freedom in  India  and accused its government had taken “minimal credible steps” to identify and punish the officials who committed the rights abuses.
