Thailand and Cambodia agree to unconditional ceasefire after deadly border clashes
After nearly a week of intense fighting along their shared border, Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire starting at midnight on July 28, 2025. The announcement followed high-level mediation talks hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who currently chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The ceasefire marks a crucial step toward calming one of Southeast Asia’s most volatile and long-standing border disputes.
Prime Minister Anwar announced the ceasefire on July 28 after hours of negotiations held at his official residence in Putrajaya, Malaysia’s administrative capital. The talks involved the top leaders of Thailand and Cambodia, as well as the ambassadors from the United States and China, both of whom played a supportive role in brokering the deal.
“Both Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding as follows: one, an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with effect from 24 hours local time, midnight on 28th July 2025, tonight,” Anwar stated during a press briefing.
This development follows several days of heavy artillery exchanges, troop buildups, and escalating hostilities along the 817-kilometer land border between the two countries. The conflict has been described as the deadliest between Thailand and Cambodia in over a decade.
The involvement of Malaysia, a fellow ASEAN member, as a mediator signals the regional bloc’s increasing readiness to take a more proactive role in resolving disputes among its members, moving beyond its traditional stance of non-interference.
Thailand and Cambodia share a fraught history marked by recurring territorial disputes, often involving ownership and control of border areas, including culturally and historically significant sites.
