As President Donald Trump recently spoke of “good talks” with Iran, Tehran publicly hanged Amir Hossein Safari Hosseinabadi and Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani in Isfahan. Iran’s judiciary said the two men helped kill four police officers, burn a police station, and damage public property during January’s nationwide uprising.

The charges are grave. So are the due-process failures. A day before the executions, United Nations experts warned that 12 defendants in the Alikhani Square case had been sentenced to death in a single closed hearing. They cited allegations of coerced confessions, denial of legal representation, and failure to establish individual responsibility. Two other men in the case were executed on July 19. Eight remain under sentence of death.
