Normally, a politician showing up at the groundbreaking of a new road is nothing but a publicity stunt, a photo-op.

But for Ontario Premier Doug Ford, showing up at the groundbreaking of the Webequie Supply Road leading to the Ring of Fire in Northern Ontario is a justified victory lap.

I’ve been listening to politicians talk about the Ring of Fire and its potential for decades and if it wasn’t for Doug Ford, we’d still be hearing about it decades from now with nothing changing.

To get to this point, Ford had to forge true partnerships with First Nations leadership in the region, fight back against a hostile Liberal government in Ottawa and find a power solution for the eventual mining projects in the area. That he was able to do so is a testament to his tenacity, and that of his Minister of Indigenous Affairs Greg Rickford.
