The commercial driver’s license at the heart of a viral storm earlier this month has led New York and federal officials to fire off conflicting statements that still don’t answer the central question: Was the license issued in error?

New York says the federal government allowed Anmol Anmol, who entered the U.S. illegally in 2023, to remain in the country and that he had federal documentation they believed justified issuing him the license.

The federal government says Anmol, who is from India, is here illegally and is now in removal proceedings — period, end of sentence.
