Editorial: Blaming the wrong people

Lt. Brian Strock with the Watervliet Police Department holds a police report on the accidental death of a toddler that the department investigated. Strock has spoken out about state reports that fail to provide the complete picture of how a child died.

If there is anything more traumatic than losing your child, it may be finding out that a state agency charged with protecting young people has wrongly identified you as a possible culprit in that death — and that the agency’s false conclusion is publicly available.

According to reporting by the Times Union’s Kathleen Moore, that is precisely what has happened at the state Office of Children and Family Services, which is required to produce a fatality report within six months of receiving notification of a child’s death in........
