Commentary: Pass the CARE Act to protect incarcerated mothers and their infants

Under the Trump administration, Americans are looking to the states to safeguard their fundamental rights and reproductive health. That’s why New York must pass the Compassionate and Reproductive Equity (CARE) Act to protect the health care rights of a very vulnerable population: incarcerated mothers and their infants.
The CARE Act (S4583/A4879) would support healthy pregnancies by standardizing comprehensive perinatal care for the incarcerated. It would ensure that the parent-to-be receives timely ultrasounds and additional food — both of which are necessities for a healthy pregnancy.
