Gov. Kathy Hochul has allocated $200 million for economic development in downtown Albany, a city that is a leader in childhood lead poisoning, and where families living along South Pearl Street near Mt. Hope Drive suffer constantly from the noise and toxic fumes of truck traffic. Albany needs to do the right thing and direct some of the funds to improve the lives of those who live in marginalized neighborhoods. Surely, there is enough money in that $200 million to conduct lead paint testing and abatement and to build affordable housing in the heart of downtown within walking distance of a grocery store and pharmacy. We can’t bring back the 98-acre neighborhood leveled to build the Empire State Plaza, but the “parking lot” district could be turned into a new neighborhood that would bring permanent vitality to downtown. There may be a need for more office buildings and commerce, but Albany needs to prioritize the betterment of ordinary people’s lives. Improving health and welfare for its residents will lead to an improved economy for all of Albany.

We thank the volunteers, would-be voters, and everyone who stopped at information tables during National Voter Registration Day in September. The mission of the League of Women Voters is to provide non-partisan voter education regarding the process of voting and opportunities to register and vote, and to promote confidence in our election system.

Armed with information provided by the Albany County Board of Elections, volunteers provided information at all 14 Price Chopper and Market 32s throughout Albany County; other local leagues also managed tables at markets, libraries and public sites in adjoining counties. Managers and staff at these stores welcomed the Leagues in a spirited and patriotic display of support for voters’ rights.

Vote411.org, the League-supported online tool, provides everyone, no matter their political stance, with the necessary details on voting and ballot information to complete their ballot and cast their vote with confidence. All we ask is that you consider your options and vote. Our motto is: "Voting Counts."

The writer is the president of the League of Women Voters of Albany County.
